The Three Mask Types — Which One Is Yours?

Nasal mask — covers the nose only. The versatile middle ground and the type most patients do well with. Good seal, reasonable field of view, works across a wide pressure range. If you breathe through your nose and don’t know where to start, start here.

Nasal pillow — sits at the nostrils. The lightest, least intrusive option. Minimal contact with the face, nothing blocking your line of sight, and popular with side sleepers, glasses-wearers, and anyone who feels boxed-in by larger masks. Best at lower-to-moderate pressures; very high pressures can feel like too much air through so small a contact point.

Full face mask — covers nose and mouth. The right choice for mouth breathers, people with chronic nasal congestion or a deviated septum, and patients on higher pressures (which is why it’s common with BiPAP). If you wake with a dry mouth on a nasal mask, your mouth is falling open at night and a full face mask usually solves it.

When and What to Replace

A mask is not a one-time purchase — the cushion is a consumable that wears, and a worn cushion leaks.
